January 1, 2007--Septic issues

Our drains had finally started to work properly, and then we got a bunch more rain Saturday night and yesterdsay, and now it's snowing. So they are backed up again. We are going to borrow a port-a-pot from Erick's parents and try to put in as little additional water as possible into the drains. The man who owns the house, Jose, came by Saturday. Things were working that day, but we asked him about the problem and he said it does that when we get a lot of rain here. He had the tank pumped out a couple of years ago and it didn't help--as soon as it filled up with water, it was doing it again. There really isn't much of a septic system here. There's no finger system--just a tank and a pipe. We are in a low spot in town anyway. We have a huge puddle out back. We are praying for the weather to dry up. We were asking him whether or not they were going to be moving back this spring or not, and he started talking about taking care of his mother-in-law. I'm not entirely sure what that had to do with it, except that I think his wife is sending money to Mexico to take care of her mother. It sounds like they cannot move back here. They are talking about going back to Mexico. If they do, they will probably abandon this house altogether, unless they could sell it for some fast cash. I have a feeling it will be abandoned if Erick and I leave it, which would be a waste. We've put a lot of work into it. Even if it just sits empty for awhile, it's not going to be a good thing, because someone needs to keep the electric on to keep the sump pump working in the basement. Water is coming into that basement so fast it wouldn't take long to fill up. The sump pump kicks on every minute or so now. Jose kept telling us, "Don't worry. Just relax. God is good. He has a plan for you. He will provide for you. Who knows, someone may just give you a house!" I couldn't help but wonder if Jose is planning on just letting us have it. The way the septic system is acting, I don't know if that would be a good thing or not! It will be a moot point in about six years, though. They are going to be putting our town on a sewer system. We could purchase the property next to us that's for sale, which is an empty lot, and put in a real septic system. That would cost about $15,000. That would be cheaper than buying a place. I wouldn't want to just take the house for free, though. If they give us a house, we'll give them some money. It won't be what the place is worth, because we wouldn't have enough for that, but it would be more than if they were to just abandon it. Of course, these are all just thoughts. Who knows what will happen? Only God knows. We can speculate and wonder, but He is the one that opens and closes doors. If God wants to just give us a house, He's big enough to take care of septic problems. If God wants to move us on the somewhere else, He'll let us know that, too. We don't have to know all the answers--we just need to trust God and do what He tells us. Right now we're still waiting. That's the last word we heard from Him. Sometimes it's difficult to not have a five-year plan, because other people want to know what our plans are. It sounds terribly irresponsible to just say, "I don't know--we're waiting on God to tell us." Sometimes I don't know how to answer those questions. God will let us know in His own time, though.
