August 27, 2008--Canning and arguing

We've been doing a lot of canning in the past couple of weeks. We put up about 45 quarts of tomatoes yesterday, and a bunch more beans today.

It's kind of funny the way Erick and I do things like canning together. It's funny because even though we've both said things about the way we were raised and the way that our parents did things that "We weren't going to do it that way!", when it comes to other things, we do it just like our parents did it.

They say that the older you get the smarter your parents become. The only problem is, our parents didn't always do things the same way! I think our parents would laugh if they could hear Erick and I arguing over how to do things. "Well, MY mom always did it this way!" "Well, MY mom always did it that way!" We're lucky we haven't had a knock-down, drag-out fight over it yet. His mom always put up lots of tomato juice, because she used tomato juice in chili and soups and other things, and so tomato juice was a staple. My mom always put up lots of whole tomatoes, because she used them in chili and soups and other things, and so whole tomatoes were a staple in everything. Of course I think my mom used the tomatoes better and he thinks his mom did.

It's so funny how even if we disagree with our parents on issues how their parenting is still the standard we hold to when we are trying to figure out how something should be done.

We ended up doing half tomatoes and half juice. After all, I do use quite a bit of both in my cooking!
