The kids competed in this year's Pinewood Derby last
Wednesday. We entered three cars this year from Jay, Joy, and Sarah. Abby could
have, but I want her to wait until she's in kindergarten to race. I like them to
do most of the work themselves.
Erick helped them cut them out of course,
but the kids sanded and painted them and even put the wheels on (mostly) by
themselves. They won't win any workmanship awards yet, but at least it's their
own work.
Jay's car wasn't very fast, but he had the good fortune to be
racing against some other fairly slow cars and ended up getting a second place
ribbon in his heat. The way they did it this year was to award first, second,
third, and fourth place ribbons for each heat, and then to average the top four
times for each divisions and awarded trophies to them.
Joy and Sarah were
both in the same division this year, but in different heats, and they both won
first place ribbons in their heats. Joy also got a third place trophy. I had to
get onto her a little bit for bragging ("I guess I'm the only one in the family
who ever gets any trophies, aren't I, Mom?") but all the kids were happy and no
one cried this year. Jay was okay with not getting a first place ribbon, and to
make things even better, a friend at church gave him a bag of hand-me-downs and
so he got to go through them that evening.
Another lady gave me a few little
girl shoes and coats. There's the prettiest coat in there, a black leather-like
coat with leopard fur trim (not real fur, of course!) but it's too small for any
of my girls. I might give it away on freecycle.org. I've been doing a lot of
freecycling lately.
I'd better go, someone is crying.
