February 13, 2005--Erick's grandpa and his mustache

I've got a couple of things to blog about today. One is sad, and the other is kind of funny.
I'll start with the sad one, because it's a major thing right now.

Erick's grandpa is dying. He had a stroke the day after Christmas and has been in and out of the hospital. He was doing pretty well at one point and they moved him to a nursing home, but they were not treating him well and he got bad bedsores. Because of the bedsores he now has an infection throughout his body and recently went through surgery to remove flesh that was so badly infected it couldn't be saved. They put him on strong antibiotics and they weren't working, and he requested yesterday to be taken off the antibiotics and let nature take its course. I don't know exactly how long it will take, but we are working on plans to get at least Erick up to Indiana for a funeral when Grandpa passes on. He's ready to go, but it's hard on Erick because they were best buddies.

It just hasn't been Erick's day. Today he spilled coffee in his lap in Sunday School. Before he left for church he was getting ready and he went to trim his mustache (this is the thing that was kind of funny that I referred to earlier). A couple of days ago I borrowed his trimmer to trim the edges of Jay's hair, and I adjusted it to trim really close and forgot to re-adjust it before I put it back in the drawer. You guessed it--Erick shaved off his mustache accidentally. He looks Amish. I've been calling him Eli today.
