January 25, 2007--Adoption shower
I've been just about too busy to post this last week! Last Saturday we had the spelling bee for the homeschool group. My mom had told the kids involved that the younger kids only needed to concentrate on the middle section of the book, so they studied from that section. The lady my mom asked to be the pronouncer didn't read the e-mail all the way through and didn't catch that tidbit of information, and asked questions from all over the book. Out of twenty words she asked, only three of them were words the kids had studies. The poor kids were in tears. Both Jay and Joy got four words right each, and the winner only got eight right. Afterwards we decided to have a spelldown with just the middle section of the book so the kids could actually have a chance to spell the words they'd studied, and they both enjoyed that. The kid who won the first time won the second time as well, but they were happy just to get a chance to show what they've learned.
On Sunday, we had the adoption shower for our pastor and his wife. It went really well. At first, I was a little nervous because it looked like out of four people that were supposed to be putting this on, only me and one other lady were going to be doing most of the work. The third dropped off some cupcakes and centerpieces and confetti, and told me she wasn't going to be able to stay, and and the fourth never showed up at all. But I had another lady who wasn't signed up to help who at the last minute asked if I needed any, and I took her up on that. She went and got balloons and streamers and decorated everything. It was beautiful!
I was in charge of the entertainment. One of the games I did was to have our pastor and his wife come up and have a race to see which one could make six peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and put them in little baggies the first. It was so much fun. The pastor wasn't spreading his jelly out, so he was the fastest. I awarded him with a Certificate of Achievement and the title of Official Sandwich Maker and Lunch Packer. The pastor's wife was actually pouring the jelly from the jar onto her sandwiches, and those sandwiches were so messy and sticky it was pathetic!
The funniest part was that before the game I got up, casually holding a measuring tape in my hand. I asked the audience how many had every been to one of those baby showers where they played the game where you measure the mother's tummy and everyone guesses how big it is. After I got everyone believing that we were going to be playing that game, I said, "Does everyone remember how that game is played? Good, because we aren't going to play it." It was so funny, especially the look on the pastor's wife's face.
Yesterday, Erick went in for his interview to get his ministerial license, and I went with him. It went well, although it took a lot longer than I thought it would. I've never been for an interview that lasted two hours! He was a really neat guy, and I enjoyed talking to him. He used to go to the same church we went to in Missouri, about sixteen years ago, so he knew a lot of the same people we did. He also went to CBC and even taught there for awhile.
So that's the rundown on what we've been doing lately. Oh, and I also have found another forum that is only for homeschool graduates. So I've been posting on it a little bit, not much though. I wouldn't leave here and I don't have enough time for two forums. I barely have enough time for one! We've also been working on finishing up the kitchen. We're doing the cabinets now, painting them white. They are going to be so pretty when we are done with them!
