We just came back last night from a week in Indiana. It was a good week, even
though the weather was gray and depressing. We had a good visit with our
families. We met with Pastor Brent, too. I've written before about how the
church doesn't have the budget to hire Erick, so he will be looking for a
secular job when we move there.
The Minister of Evangelism is going to
be going to part time because he's going to be taking a part time job as the
chaplain of a jail there. Eventually, he will be working towards not being on
staff at the church at all, which will give the church some breathing room in
their budget. Who knows--maybe in a year or two attendance will be back up again
and they could afford to put Erick on staff, at least part time. Next time we
come up we're going to discuss the particulars of what Erick is going to be
doing there, and what exactly that means.
Erick bought a truck while we
were there--his grandpa's truck. When Grandpa died last year, Erick's brother
bought the truck from his grandmother. Erick got to talking to his brother and
found out that he had never actually paid Grandma for the truck, and really
couldn't afford to buy it. Erick asked if he would mind if he bought it instead,
since he had the money for it, and he said that would be okay.
We also
got to meet Erick's sister's new husband--the one she eloped with. They are
staying at her parents' house still. The foreclosure they are buying has run
into some problems, so they aren't sure when or if they will actually be able to
buy it.
We did some school activities at both my parents' and Erick's
parents' houses. I'm hoping to co-op regularly with my mom when we move back.
On the way home, Erick was going to bring back the truck he bought. It
was really windy, though, and an hour into the trip he changed his mind. We took
the truck back and parked it at Grandma's, and then brought the trailer we had
rented back to U-Haul and went on to Missouri. God must have sent that wind,
though, because we are so glad now we did not take it with us. The Suburban
started acting up half-way through Illinois. The engine kept cutting out. We
were starting to wonder if we'd make it home or not. We also had some really bad
storms we drove through. We were praying we'd make it home. I had visions of
being stranded on the side of the road with tornados running over us. It was
scary for awhile, but I kept singing all the songs I knew about God's provision
and protection, and eventually the Suburban started running smoother. We got
home fine, about 15 minutes before quarter sized hail broke out. There were
tornado watches out and everything. It would not have been fun trying to haul a
truck behind us with all that going on. Besides, Erick would have wanted to work
on it, and he's got other things to do with his time. He does have to work on
the Suburban, though. That's what he's doing now.
