My son has reached the age where he knows more than his
parents do. He's seven. The reason he knows more is that he can read well now.
We realized this when he bought himeself a new toy and it needed batteries.
He got the batteries and the screwdriver and read the directions. When Daddy
volunteered to install them for him, Jay ran off to get the instruction sheet to
give to Daddy to read. When Daddy refused to read the directions before he
installed them (he told Jay he had put batteries in toys before and already knew
what direction to turn the screwdriver) Jay was really concerned. You could see
the worry in his eyes as he closely supervised his dad to make sure he was doing
it right. It must have been a bit scary for a kid who knows about this stuff to
let a guy do it who didn't even read the directions first.
