July 11, 2008--Fashion Review

We've been really busy getting ready for the 4-H fair lately. We just about have everything done. Yesterday was the fashion revue. Sarah made a pink flowered skirt, and Joy made a poodle skirt, except it had a cat instead of a poodle. I had ordered some brown saddle shoes off of Ebay to go with it, but they didn't arrive in time. They actually came by UPS between the time of the judging yesterday at 4:30 and the public fashion show at 8:00. She wore ballet slippers instead. They both looked really nice, but the competition was tough, so they didn't win. The judge said this was the toughest show she'd judged, and that for her first time ever, she awarded all of the girls an honor placing. When I was in Fashion Revue, I never got into the honor group. So they still did a great job.

Here's how Joy and Sarah looked in their outfits.

Tomorrow everything else is being judged. We've been working all day on trying to get everything ready to go. The skirts still have to be judged for contruction tomorrow, so they've had to iron them and Joy's had to press out her waistband. It was too big for her, so it was pinned up yesterday for the fashion revue. Jay's had his projects done for awhile, but he still had some record sheets together. Sarah finished up her scarf today. She kept cutting the fringe shorter and shorter, trying to even it all out, until I put a stop to it.

The biggest challenge has been getting the foods projects ready to go. It's always so stressful trying to get things to look just perfect. Joy made Orange Nut Muffins first, but they were too short and too browned. We didn't have enough ingredients to make another batch, so she made a batch of French Breakfast Muffins instead. She only had enough batter to make seven, for some reason, and then two of them tore getting them out of the pan. She has to show six. We patched it back together in hopes that the judge won't notice.

Sarah's cookies are just slightly browner than I'd like them. Last year Joy's were slightly underdone. Trying to get it cooked to the exact perfect doneness is about impossible.

We'll be leaving here early tomorrow morning, and we'll be there most of the day. It's going to be fun, but tiring.
