Saturday we took all of the kids' projects to the 4-H fair for judging. They did
really well. They all got blue ribbons on everything. Joy got a blue star on her
giftwrapping project, which means her project is being considered for champion.
None of the others got blue stars, but we knew that didn't necessarily mean they
wouldn't get champion, because not all judges do blue stars. In Sullivan County,
they do it differently than how they do it in Carroll County. There you check
everything in, and then the judging is at different times. Here you stand in
line with your project, check it in, and the judge judges it right then. Then
they close the building for the rest of the day to pick champions. Since the
building didn't open up again until the evening, we went on home and decided to
come back Sunday after church to see how they did.
Saturday night it
started to rain, and soon we had flash flood warnings again. The backyard
flooded again, worse than I've ever seen it. Jay's baseball glove got washed
away, and one of my shoes almost did too when I was out in it trying to get
pictures. Erick grabbed it just in time.
The water was coming over the
hill again like a waterfall and dumped even more gravel in our yard. It tore up
the culvert again, and also torn up the road from Hymera to the point that it is
now unpassable. The county closed down that road altogether, and we have to take
back roads to get out.
Here are a few pictures of the flooding this time
around:
Here's a picture of the water at it's peak, coming over the
hill. I'm standing on the deck, inside the back door out of the rain to take
this picture.
This is the culvert. You can see how the water just tore it up. The'd already fixed it last time it flooded.
Erick had to call everyone in our church Sunday morning to tell them the main way was impassable and to come another way. We didn't expect a big turn-out, but nearly everyone showed up and we turned out with a good attendance after all. I think they all just wanted to see if they could make it. They enjoyed the challenge.
After church we went back to the fair, and although Joy didn't get a champion on her giftwrapping after all, Sarah got a champion on her scarf, and Jay got reserve champions on his computer projects and his wildlife project, and also a grand champion on his weather project! I've included a few photos of thier 4-H projects here:
Sarah's champion scarf
Joy's gift wrapping project
Joy's acrylic painting (I had to show two of Joy's projects, because her painting turned out really nice!)
Jay's grand champion weather project
Abby's mini-4-H collections project
