October 8, 2007--The Overtones
I forgot to mention that we had a big event in our small town yesterday. Our town is very small--we have a church, a post office, and a small used car lot, plus maybe 60 houses, half of them for sale. We live next door to the church.
I had been talking to one of our neighbors Saturday who comes around quite a bit--an elderly lady in her late seventies who had an accident when she was younger that damaged her brain. She talks a lot, but sometimes she's difficult to understand. She was talking about a funeral, and she was talking about going over to the church to get ready for tomorrow, and other things. I thought I had figured out there was going to be a funeral at the church tomorrow, and we even wondered if someone would take our parking space while we were at church Sunday like they do sometimes.
When we got back from church there were a LOT of cars--many more than there usually is. Thankfully they hadn't taken our space, but they were parked up and down the side road and in the church lawn. I thought that the person who they were having the funeral for must have been well loved. As we were getting ready for lunch, I happened to look out and saw a big Suburban pulling a long trailer trying to squeeze down the road, and on the trailer it said, "The Overtones." The Overtones are a Southern Gospel group that is orignally from the area (Rossville, actually) and I guess are relation of my husband's family. My first thought was, "Why are The Overtones coming to the funeral?" I thought maybe they had got them to sing at the funeral, and then I thought maybe they were related. It didn't even dawn on me until I left for Life Chain and saw the sign outside the church that there was a concert going on, in our town!
I guess the funeral is later on this week. One of our former township trustees passed away, and her funeral will be in a couple of days.
